£4.50 per student (accompanying adults free) 10am - 1pm (lunching areas are available upon request)
Linking in with the National Curriculum’s Key Stage 2 Geography “Breadth of Study” Milton Keynes is used as both the focus of study and a comparison with the pupils home town. This three-hour session is built around the NC suggested themes for study:
- Water and landscape
- Settlement characteristics
- Environmental issues
|
IntroductionThe first hour begins with an interactive PowerPoint introduction to Milton Keynes which includes:
- The reasons why Milton Keynes is located where it is (settlements, water and regional perspectives)
- The impact of a new city on an area which was formally mainly agricultural (environmental issues).
- The features which make Milton Keynes different from most other British locations such as the road system, general layout, energy efficient housing and lots of green space (settlement characteristics)
- The natural tendency of this part of Britain to flood and how a system of parks and lakes has been created to meet this threat (environmental issues)
During this introduction pupils are encouraged to contribute views and facts about their home town using an activity sheet to help structure comparisons.
Study tourThe next two hours comprise a study tour of the new city. The itinerary for this tour includes:
- A range of housing estates to illustrate contrasts of age, design and socio-economic characteristics
- Locations which show the transition from agriculture to urban or from an industrial past to a modern city
- A range of shopping centres
- Examples of balancing lakes for flood management
During the study tour, a general environment survey will be undertaken unless directed otherwise by the teacher.
Schools to provide their own coach, which must include a public address system in good working order. Please stress the importance of this feature when booking your coach.
